Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy in Flagstaff, AZ

Supporting Healthy Breathing, Sleep, Jaw Function & Oral Development

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is a personalized therapy that focuses on the muscles and functions of the tongue, lips, cheeks, and jaw. Through targeted exercises and education, therapy helps improve patterns related to tongue posture, breathing, swallowing, chewing, and oral rest posture.

How Can Myofunctional Therapy Help?

Myofunctional Therapy may be beneficial for both children and adults experiencing:

  • Mouth breathing or difficulty with nasal breathing
  • Improper tongue posture or tongue thrust
  • Swallowing or chewing concerns
  • TMJ and jaw-related muscle tension
  • Certain oral habits and developmental concerns
  • Support during orthodontic treatment
  • Sleep-related breathing concerns

Myofunctional Therapy & Sleep

As part of our Sleep Protocol, Myofunctional Therapy may be used alongside other dental and healthcare services to address oral and functional patterns that may be relevant to breathing and sleep.

Therapy for Children

For children, therapy focuses on developing healthy oral habits and functional patterns, including proper tongue posture, resolving tongue ties, nasal breathing, swallowing, and oral rest posture. Early intervention may be helpful when concerns are identified.

What to Expect

Your initial evaluation will look at your individual oral and facial muscle patterns, breathing, tongue posture, swallowing, and jaw function. If therapy is appropriate, you will receive a personalized program of exercises to practice at our office and at home, with follow-up visits to monitor your progress.
